Joseph Pilates, the founder of the method, created a number of machines with which to execute these moves as well as a repertoire of exercises to be performed without machines. You can do a significant amount of Pilates exercises on a mat without using expensive or bulky equipment.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Versatility&lt;/span&gt; - One benefit of the Pilates mat repertoire is its versatility. For work on the apparatus, you need access to Pilates machines, but you can practice mat work almost anywhere. You don't need to take a break from your workouts while traveling, as you can easily perform Pilates mat moves in a hotel room. You can also do mat work at home as well as the in the gym. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;Cost&lt;/span&gt; - Pilates mat work can be a less-expensive option than other forms of exercise. Group mat sessions are much more affordable than private one-on-one equipment sessions with a personal trainer or certified Pilates instructor. You can also supplement formal study by doing mat work at home. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Challenges&lt;/span&gt; - Mat work can range from relatively easy moves for beginners to extremely difficult moves for more advanced, experienced practitioners. Pilates mat work utilizes the "core" or abdominal muscles, and it features moves lying on the back, sides, stomach as well as standing. As you progress, you can integrate small apparatus, such as a fitness ball, fitness circle, weights, resistance bands or foam rollers, to increase the difficulty of the work. You can also find Pilates mat work materials for working on such specific issues as Pilates for pregnancy, osteoporosis, back pain, cardiovascular fitness and weight loss. &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;Tip:  Add a fitness ball to your Pilates mat work to increase the level of difficulty.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;Cross-Training&lt;/span&gt; - Strength training enthusiasts find Pilates mat moves to have beneficial applications to their weight training programs. They often integrate Pilates mat work into pre-workout warm-ups. His passion lies in anything having to do with the outdoors, hunting, camping, fishing, and extreme sports. To his extreme surprise, Joe fell from a tree stand last year and fractured his T6-T9 vertebrae. He crushed his spinal cord and Joe is now paralyzed from the torso down. Wheelchair life has so far been scary, confusing, warming, tragic, and in a nutshell: unreal. But it is definitely real.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Then Joe moved from the St. Louis area where he grew up.  He and his sisters, Mollie and Rachel, now live in South Austin. He works at the YMCA and plays more PS3 these days than he would like to admit. He operated a crane (a family business) before his injury and expects to start school at ACC in Spring 2011, possibly to transfer to UT once he “gets the hang of it.” &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This upcoming season, Joe plans to start practicing with the &lt;a href="http://www.austinrecers.org/aboutus.htm"&gt;Austin Rec’ers&lt;/a&gt;, keeping his eye on the goal of earning a spot on the team. With hopes and prayers for physical healing and medical progress, Joe continues to work out and does his best to keep a positive attitude and stay motivated toward the lifestyle he knew prior to his injury. Some days are better than others, but every day is worth giving thanks for life.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Joe has told us that he feels very fortunate to have gotten connected with the YMCA, Roll2Walk, and of course, Gray Godwin at SCAC. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;"A special thanks to the South Congress Athletic Club and Uncle Billy’s for hosting the First Thursday “Workout Happy Hour" and I want everyone to know how truly grateful I am for their care and support of my continued recovery."&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So tonight, we at SCAC want to say thanks to Joe for being an inspiration to us by working so friggin' hard. She was choosing between the multi-colored floral ones with ankle ties and the more tropical version with splayed banana leaves, rattling on about how she needed to get back into yoga and that these items were going to help her with that.  I wanted to encourage her to go to the local Target instead but just listened.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As she pulled off one of the anklets and held it up against the flowered pants she had settled on, her husband manhandled the door, keeping his shoes on despite our sign which asked for patrons to remove them and wipe their feet before entering.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“You figured out your yoga here?”  His booming voice displayed a very distinct New Jersey accent. “You helping my wife with the yoga thing?” He didn’t seem to be directing his questions to anyone in particular, if they were questions at all. He busily chomped on his gum, running his footballer hands through the Prana tights, his head darting all around the room–making obvious moves to scope things out. With a quick swoop, his sunglasses were off, and as he rocked back and forth on his heels, hands on his hips, towering over me.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I let my eyes linger on his sand-covered flip-flops before I met his gaze. “Yes, this is a yoga studio.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“Yeah, I hear good things about you guys. It is from our friend Lynn Heisel, Certified Holistic Nutrition Counselor, AADP who can be reached for more info at &lt;a href="http://bodysoulandbowl.com/"&gt;http://bodysoulandbowl.com/&lt;/a&gt;.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;Chickpeas are the secret ingredient in these rich, delicious brownies.  I've served them to many rave reviews and no one can even guess!  They are easy to make completely sugar-free, but my favorite recipe uses brown rice syrup and semisweet chocolate chips.  These brownies will deeply satisfy a sweet craving without guilt.&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;Note: These brownies are crumbly.  It helps to line the pan with parchment paper that goes over the sides, so that you may lift the brownies out after they cool.  That way you can cut them straight down with a chef's knife. Place chips in a heat resistant bowl on top of a boiling pot of water until melted.&lt;br /&gt;2. In a blender or food processor, combine beans and eggs.&lt;br /&gt;3. Add sweetener, baking powder, and melted chips. Process until smooth.&lt;br /&gt;4. Pour batter into an 8" or " square non-stick pan.&lt;br /&gt;5. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.&lt;br /&gt;6. Thanks to John and Gray, we've managed to bookend our weekdays by adding an hour to each part of the day so that folks could squeeze in as many squats as they could.
